A tentative agreement has been achieved by representatives of the European Union on the world’s first comprehensive regulations governing the use of artificial intelligence.
After 36 hours of negotiations, guidelines for AI in ChatGPT and facial recognition systems were reached.
The AI Act recommendations will be put to a vote in the European Parliament early in the next year, but no laws will be passed until at least 2025.

China, the UK, and the US are all racing to release their own sets of rules.
The recommendations limit the use of AI by law enforcement authorities and provide safeguards for its usage within the EU.
Customers would be able to file complaints, and infractions might result in fines.
The ideas, according to EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, are “historic” and provide “clear rules for the use of AI”.
He stated that it was “much more than a rulebook – it’s a launch pad for EU start-ups and researchers to lead the global AI race” .
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated that the AI Act would support the advancement of technology that does not jeopardize people’s rights and safety.
She described it as a “unique legal framework for the development of AI you can trust” in a social media post.
Software that can “for a given set of human-defined objectives, generate outputs such as content, predictions, recommendations or decisions influencing the environments they interact with” is what the European Parliament refers to as artificial intelligence (AI).
DALL-E and ChatGPT are two instances of “generative” artificial intelligence. These algorithms are able to produce fresh content that appears to have been created by a human by learning from enormous amounts of data, including text and photos found online.
ChatGPT and other so-called “chatbots” are capable of text-based communication. Simple text instructions can be used to make visuals by other AI programs, such as DALL-E.
