The first-ever metaverse was introduced on Thursday by the organizers of the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Gangwon, South Korea.

A metaverse dedicated to the Winter YOG Gangwon 2024 has been launched as an extension of the Gangwon-do Province’s metaverse by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Gangwon 2024 Organising Committee (YOGOC), and the Gangwon-do Province, with support from the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology (MSIT) of South Korea.
According to a release from the IOC on Thursday, this exceptional virtual environment provides users worldwide with a range of engaging activities, contributing to the goal of making Gangwon 2024 as inclusive and accessible as possible, especially for younger fans.
The Gangwon 2024 Metaverse offers fans new and interesting ways to interact with the YOG, ranging from virtual tours of the venues to games and challenges where fans may compete against other users in online mini-games of ski jumping, bobsleighing, and curling.
Sporting event streaming will also be available to users residing in the Republic of Korea. Together with encouraging visitors to experience new winter activities and learn about Olympic ideals, the metaverse offers a platform for fans worldwide to connect and engage.
Six languages (Korean, English, Spanish, French, Japanese, and Chinese) can be translated automatically in the metaverse to make it as accessible as possible. Users can also design unique avatars for their virtual experiences.
This involves selecting from 30 distinct characters with a wide range of customization possibilities, including varied body types, hairstyles, outfits, and emotional expressions.
Users can freely navigate the 3D virtual environment after creating their own individual avatar.
It has digital recreations of nine YOG sites, including fantasy elements, the Youth Olympic towns, and four tourism destinations in the host region.
According to the IOC statement, Gangwon 2024 will also feature a “Metaverse Experience” at the Gangneung Green City Experience Center. Here, guests will be able to virtually partake in a few winter sports using simulators, visual panels, and a virtual reality kit.
