Google has taken a temporary break from using its AI-powered tool Gemini to create photos of people. This followed a day earlier when the tech behemoth apologized for Gemini’s inaccurate portrayals of historical figures.

Google’s Gemini received flak for portraying photographs of particular white historical figures as people of color, such as the US Founding Fathers and German soldiers during the Nazi era. Backlash ensued, and by omitting to include images of white people, Google is contributing to racial bias.

Some of the critics and supporters of Gemini commented on X, pointing out that Gemini’s inconsistent nature should be challenged and that it’s sometimes a good idea to represent diversity.

A few hours after apologizing, Google said on X that they are halting the image-generating feature as they try to fix and improve the problem. They added that the enhanced version of Gemini will be re-released shortly.

The use of Gemini to generate photos is an attempt to increase variety as there was a persistent absence of it in the generative AI, according to a report.

Google reportedly does not generate images that it felt were errors. Because the image generators are programmed to provide the finest images and text captions, preconceptions may occasionally be amplified by them.

Google officially launched Gemini AI on December 6. Gemini assists with complex visual parsing and picture captioning since it combines natural language processing and image recognition.

In an attempt to rival OpenAI and Microsoft’s Copilot, Google started making the image generating function available in the AI-powered Gemini tool. Based on a written prompt, the image generating program creates a set of images.

Apart from Google, ChatGPT from OpenAI has also fixed a problem. Instead of producing the customary output, ChatGPT began to malfunction, give unexpected responses, and spit forth meaningless phrases.
