According to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, startups are exempt from the government advisory that required AI platforms to obtain consent before releasing an AI product.

The minister stated on social media site X (previously Twitter), “It’s important to comprehend the recent advice from @GoI_MeitY.

The advice is intended for significant platforms, and startups are exempt from the requirement that major platforms obtain approval from Meity.”

“The procedure for obtaining consent, labeling, and consent-based disclosure to users about untested platforms is an insurance policy for platforms that customers may otherwise sue.

The government, users, and platforms (sic) all have the same purpose of ensuring the safety and trustworthiness of India’s internet,” he said.

This comes after the government advised platforms who promote AI-generated material to label or embed it with an identification in order to identify the source of any misinformation, in response to Google’s Gemini debacle.

It further stated that within 15 days, platforms must provide the minister with an action taken/status report.

CEOs of Perplexity AI and Abacus AI responded to the recommendation, with Aravind Srinivas calling it a “bad move” and Bindu Reddy saying, “If you know the Indian government, you know this will be a huge drag!” There will be twelve hoops to clear and all forms that must be filled out in triplicate! This is the way monopolies prosper, nations deteriorate, and consumers suffer.”

“I was such a fool thinking I will work bringing GenAI to Indian Agriculture from SF,” said Pratik Desai of Kissan AI.

We were thrilled to be developing a multimodal, low-cost pest and disease model. After working four years straight to bring artificial intelligence to this field in India, this is awful and demoralizing.
